Happy Mother’s Day

History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a holiday honouring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world.

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

It was first recorded as far back as 1600.

Records give examples of entire communities coming together on the fourth Sunday of lent in their “Mother Church” where they were baptised or christened.

Held in early spring, this was a celebration to mark the death of winter and the birth of spring.

There were festivals, processions, feasting and plenty of wine throughout the world to celebrate this wonderful day.

While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting mums with flowers, cards and other gifts to say thank you to the most important person in our life.

The most important person in my life is my amazing son Luke, being a mum to him changed my life in a way that words could not express, the love and commitment I have to my wonderful son will be with me my entire life, I feel so honoured and blessed every day to be his mama.

My Mum

Mums are amazing, aren’t they?  Who else would do your washing, cook you delicious Sunday dinners, pick you up every time you fall, be a constant shoulder to cry on and still fuss and worry about you long after you’ve grown up and left home?

Mother’s Day holds an entirely different meaning for anyone whose mum has passed away.

My wonderful mum very sadly passed away last June she was not ill, but quietly suffered in silence without any of her five children known anything was wrong. From being diagnosed to passing was only ten days.

All of us, Philip, Isobel, Stuart, Nicholas and of course myself will love and miss her every day of our lives.

The pain one feels when you lose a mum as wonderful as ours is unbearable, but time is a healer so we are all told.

It goes without saying that being a mum is one of the most rewarding jobs out there and not a day goes by where we aren’t grateful for all the hard work and sacrifices that mums across the world make for their families.

Remembering Mum on Mother’s Day

No matter how much time passes, the pain of losing your mum is something that stays with you forever. Though Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to spend with your family and children, it can also be pretty hard if your own mum like mine has passed away.

It can also be incredibly difficult to watch your friends or even strangers with their mother’s, knowing that your mum is no longer with you.

She may not be here is person but she will always be with me in spirit and it brings great comfort to remember that special woman in my life on the day that celebrates all Mothers.

The world changes from year to year
Our lives from day to day
But! the love and memory of you
Shall never pass away.

Here’s to all of the mums out there. May we humbly say that you’re simply the best.

Thank you all mums for everything you do every day.

Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard but always near
Still loved, still missed and held so dear…
