The Lodge Stone Bridge

During lock down this year we were closed for 6 months, and decided to use the time to restore the old bridge and entrance to The Lodge.

The original wooden bridge had not been used for over 30 years and was beyond economical repair. The timber sleepers were rotten and the steel work was badly corroded. We had purchased the land adjacent to The Lodge and when the properties were joined a new bridge was needed to allow visitors & guests to cross Glennie Burn.

The Ferguson family had previously refurbished the house from a very modest cottage to a grand Lochside villa. The employed the services of renowned architect William Leiper, responsible for the famous Templeton’s Carpet Factory in Glasgow amongst many others.

The work started in May 2020 and the bridge and road was completed at the end of November. The work was done by the proprietor Iain with our friend Murdo, a local dry stone Dyker. Murdo previously taught Iain how to build a dry stone wall. Both Alice and Luke also helped with this project.

The granite cobbles are reclaimed from the Candleriggs in Glasgow, the cobbles were individually selected then laid by hand.

The entrance is now open and the bridge over Glennie Burn has allowed the original stables and Glennie Cottage which were the staff accommodation to be reconnected and joined again after 63 years.

I am sure you will agree the end result looks great.

My husband and I really felt like part of the family, especially since it was just the two of us, and creating such a lovely intimate environment is again, something you can’t fake- you can only get it if you have the right people on the day, and man did we have the right people on the day!
If anyone is thinking of hosting their wedding here, either with a party or just a small group, I cannot reiterate enough that you are on the right path (if you want the path to perfection).
